Firing with Susan Roden

I had the pleasure of joining Susan for the sixth firing of her wonderful hybrid kiln, last weekend.

We fired for 20 hours using propane and wood, after an overnight preheat to 1100 degrees. At about 1 AM we added a pound of soda ash, not expecting much. At 2 AM we shut down, at 2200 degrees

These cups were a lovely surprise, showing plenty of wood and soda effect. I’m excited about the possibilities for surface and color this new atmosphere opens up.
